About the photography

The photos In spite of the difference in technique the photographic images of Hans Abbing are closely related to his drawings. Both in his drawings and in his photographs he creates a new reality. Because it breaks away from the familiar his images can be hurtful, but this is not what Abbing is after. Although his bodies and faces may appear mutilated, he experiences them as less hypocritical than the ‘real’ people and therefore also as more trustworthy and more beautiful.

The technique Hans Abbing does not manipulate his photographs with the computer. Everything one sees was already there on the negative. The only difference with traditional photography is that the negative is not taken all at once but from left to right — for instance in a few seconds or even a few minutes. While the film moves along a slid, the model moves through the narrow corridor the lens projects on the film. The result is a kind of scan made of the model.

a. In most photographs the model rests on a turntable and so moves through the corridor.   b. In some cases however the model itself moves by walking, moving an arm etc.   c. In exceptional cases the model does not move, but the camera moves.
